Kentucky License Plate

What is a Kentucky License Plate?

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Division of Motor Vehicle Licensing issues all license plates and sets registration policy under Chapter 186 KRS. County clerks handle the actual registrations, renewals, and transfers of license plates in each of Kentucky’s 120 counties.

Kentucky currently issues two standard passenger plate designs: the “Bluegrass State” plate and the “In God We Trust” plate. Both use digital printing on flat material, replacing the old embossed format.

Types of License Plates in Kentucky

  • Standard plates are assigned at registration without a separate plate fee. A lost or damaged plate can be replaced through the county clerk for a fee of $6.
  • Over 150 specialty designs cover universities, nonprofits, and causes. Organizational plates created under KRS 186.164 have an initial fee of $41 and an annual renewal of $41, which includes a $10 contribution to the sponsoring group.
  • Personalization costs $25 in addition to the base plate fee and is available for most standard, military, and specialty plates (Kentucky personalized plate portal).
  • Disabled veterans with a 100% service-connected disability and recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor pay nothing for both initial issuance and renewal. Former POW, Pearl Harbor, and Purple Heart plates have an initial fee of $23 and a renewal of $11 (KRS 186.162).
  • A ham radio plate costs $43 for initial issuance and $18 for renewal; historic vehicle plates cost $56 one-time and do not require annual renewal.

Is Driving Around with No License Plate in Kentucky Illegal?
