Kentucky License Plate Renewal

What Is License Plate Renewal in Kentucky?

License plate renewal in Kentucky extends your vehicle’s registration for another 12 consecutive months. Your plate number and physical plate remain unchanged. The county clerk issues a new registration receipt and a year/month sticker for the rear plate.

  • Annual cycle. Passenger vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds renew on a birth month schedule set by KRS 186A.035. Registration lasts from the first day after your birth month to the last day of your next birth month.
  • Renewal differs from titling. Title transfer upon sale goes through the county clerk per KRS 186.020; renewal simply extends existing registration without affecting the title.
  • Trucks by weight, motorhomes, and trailers expire on March 31. Personalized plates and most special plates expire on December 31. Business-owned vehicles may choose an April to March schedule.
  • All vehicle classes, including motorcycles and electric vehicles, renew annually through the same process at the county clerk’s office.

When Do You Need To Renew Your Kentucky License Plate?

The Kentucky Department of Revenue sends a combined tax and renewal notice at least 45 days before your registration expires, per KRS 134.805. Not receiving the notice is not a defense against penalties.

  • You can renew starting in the calendar month before the expiration month. No earlier window exists.
  • No grace period. If you do not renew during the expiration month, you pay the same registration fees plus, if registration was canceled for non-renewal, $40 for reinstatement per KRS 186.040(8).
  • Delinquent vehicle property tax incurs its own penalty: 10% of the tax if unpaid more than 30 days past due. The fee schedule in the next section covers both lines.
  • Kentucky does not require safety inspection and emissions testing for renewal. VIN inspection by a sheriff applies only to out-of-state vehicles receiving a title for the first time.

How To Renew Your License Plate in Kentucky

Before choosing a channel, ensure your Kentucky liability insurance has been active for at least 45 days on the same policy. Prepare your registration receipt and plate number. Clear any delinquent property taxes on all vehicles you own.

  • In person at your county clerk’s office, bring a Kentucky photo ID, your current registration receipt, and original proof of insurance. Payment options depend on the county but typically include cash, check, and credit card.
  • Mail-in renewals go to your county clerk’s office. Include the registration receipt, a copy of your insurance card, and payment by check or money order plus $2.00 for postage. Delinquent registrations cannot be renewed by mail.
  • Kentucky’s online registration renewal portal handles most standard plates. You’ll need the title number, plate number, and a credit or debit card.
  • Leased vehicles, vehicles with delinquent taxes, and delinquent registrations are blocked from the online portal and must be renewed in person at the county clerk’s office.

How Much Is License Plate Renewal in Kentucky?

The state registration fee is low, but the annual property tax on the vehicle’s assessed value makes up the bulk of the bill. Along with electric vehicle ownership fees, the total can be significantly higher than the base registration line suggests.

  • Passenger cars, pickups, and vans pay $11.50 state registration fee per KRS 186.050, plus $6.00 county clerk fee and $3.00 technology fee. Most county clerks quote a total renewal amount from $20.00 to $21.00.
  • Motorcycles pay a $9.00 state fee; the total renewal is approximately $17.75 after clerk and technology fees.
  • Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids pay a $126.00 annual ownership fee per KRS 138.475, charged at renewal. Electric motorcycles pay $63.00. Standard hybrids pay nothing as of January 2025.
  • Ad valorem property tax, set by each county’s tax jurisdictions, is due at renewal and varies based on vehicle value and location.
  • The $40 reinstatement fee described in the timing section applies only if registration was canceled for non-renewal. Online renewal adds $2.00 for vehicle postage plus a percentage service fee.

Can I Renew My License Plate Online in Kentucky?

Most standard passenger plates are eligible for online renewal through the Kentucky Vehicle Licensing System at drive.ky.gov. The portal accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. Allow 5-7 business days for the county clerk to process the transaction and mail your new sticker and receipt.

Vehicles with delinquent registrations, delinquent property taxes, or lease status cannot be renewed online. These renewals are directed to the county clerk’s office at the owner’s residence.

  • Mail-in packet: current registration receipt, original proof of insurance, check or money order payable to the county clerk, and $2.00 for postage. Send to your county clerk’s mailing address.
  • Mail-in renewals typically return within 2-3 business days, as currently posted by county clerk offices.

If the portal accepts your vehicle, online renewal is the most convenient path to an up-to-date sticker; the clerk’s office handles anything the portal rejects.
